It is extremely dangerous to extrapolate what prophet Muhamed said in his time to our present time. Consider for example for women to pray at home preference. It is certainly not recommended in our times where women actually should participate more fully in mosques and leadership.

The time of prophet Muhamed is not like our times. So mixing of men and women should not be a big deal. Actually, they should be mixed and encouraged to do so. However, sexual relationships out of marriage bondage should be prohibited. Any such violation is the man and woman problem and not the mixing. Muslim men and women should learn control.
